Demerit Points

Demerit Points are accumulated not lost. They stay on your record for 2 years retroactive to the offense date. When you accumulate enough points your driver’s license is suspended. If you accumulate enough tickets you will have to attend an interview. There are many factors that will determine the length of the suspension.

  2.     Driver failing to stop when signaled or requested to stop by a police officer | 7 points
  3.     Careless driving | 6 points
  4.     Racing | 6 points
  5.     Exceeding speed limit by 50 km/h or more | 6 points
  6.     Exceeding speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h | 4 points
  7.     Exceeding speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h | 3 points
  8.     Driver of public vehicle or school bus failing to stop at railway crossings | 5 points
  9.     Driving through, around or under railway crossing barrier | 3 points
  10.     Failing to yield center of way | 3 points
  11.     Failing to obey a stop sign, signal light or railway crossing signal | 3 points
  12.     Failing to obey directions of police constable | 3 points
  13.     Driving or operating a vehicle on a closed highway | 3 points
  14.     Failing to report an accident | 3 points
  15.     Improper passing | 3 points
  16.     Improper driving where highway divided into lanes | 3 points
  17.     Failing to stop for school bus | 6 points
  18.     Following too closely | 4 points
